In complete honesty, I wasn’t quite sure what all I was going to have to say about a dado stack. That changed dramatically after putting it through the paces. I was excited about this review, don’t get me wrong, but just didn’t know exactly what there was to say about a dado stack other than it works or doesn’t.
So let me back up for a minute and tell you my experience with dado sets. I used a few different sets in college that had seen so much “love” that the markings had long been removed. I had a stack that was generously given to me, that did in fact cut dados but wasn’t a carbide tooth version so I had to take multiple shallow cuts as a full depth cut would make a board feel like it was going to shatter. Then there was the Super Dado, and I was nothing short of amazed!
The results I achieved with the Super Dado were astonishing. Dados are cut without vibration or excessive force and the results are true to size, flat bottomed, and smooth on all surfaces. I really try to not get overly excited about reviews, but I can’t say enough how impressed I am with the results.
It’s a beautiful sight I know! Before you get worried, no my saw is not set up to have multiple throat plates, but just wait ’til you see the video to freak out about running a dado stack without a throat plate.
So in a nut shell, here are the specs:
- 8″ blade, 24 teeth, 5/8″ arbor
- 2 blades, 6 chippers, shim set, & carrying case (Don’t be fooled, the case is awesome!)
- Dado widths range from 1/4″ – 29/32″ in 1/32″ increments
- Carbide teeth and coated blades
- Tips and tricks DVD & poster
I told you the case was awesome, right? It also come with spacers for each of the blades and chippers so they don’t sit right on top of each other.
This dado set is available in a variety of sizes but in all honesty the 8″ will probably do everything you’d ever need. Oh, and make sure to hang on to the poster! It’s super helpful for figuring out what combination of blades, chippers, and spacers you need for the proper sized dado. Also, these dados I’ve cut so far have been spot on in width! No more fudging it or making a dozen test cuts to get things juuuuuust right!
If you want, check out the Freud site for more info on this blade. And, if you want to pick one of these up for your shop, you can get it here!
Well enough yammering on, check out this video to see what I’m talking about! If you need a dado stack, I’d seriously recommend giving the Super Dado series some consideration.
